The Gothenburg Chamber Choir was formed in 1963 by Gunnar Eriksson, who, to this day, is their director. The Choir evolved from the group of singers Eriksson got together for a radio series on choral singing in the 1960s, and has since those days developed into what it is today. The Chamber Choir now consists of about 34 singers, many of whom are connected with the Gothenburg College of Music.

Ever since the start the choir's main distinguishing mark has been a careful choice of texts, reflecting keen involvement in man's various life situations. Seeking out new parts paths to tread, this is a constant challenge for the Chamber Choir; a boundless repertoire, where classical and contemporary choral music, songs, folk music and jazz all stand alongside each other, as equally important ingredients.

With frequent tours in different parts of the world, the Gothenburg Chamber Choir has made contact with new and exiting soundscapes, such as the ruggedly beautiful sounds of Macedonia, gently lilting Cuban rhythms, and songs of present day Palestine, both lamenting and full of hope.

First and foremost, however, the Gothenburg Chamber Choir is a choir of distinctly Scandinavian - Nordic - timbre, songs and folk music from the Nordic countries having a special place in our hearts. Over the years numerous Nordic poets, musicians and composers have been befriended - and now collaborate with - the choir.

Our interest, and long tradition, of jazz and collaboration with jazz-musicians will be evident in our concerts too.
